A Story of Success – Yacoube and Ms. Greenwood

At Meadowbrook High School, our former Site Coordinator turned Program Manager, Ms. Greenwood made a habit of leaving her door open. With her office located in a main hallway of the school, her open door policy meant that she would more easily connect with students and staff when they walked by. It  also relayed to students that they could come in when they needed her support. Alternatively, it also meant she could more easily observe moments when a student was struggling. This was the case one day in the fall of 2024, when Ms. Greenwood heard yelling outside her office. Naturally, she popped her head out of her doorway to check what was going on ne day when she was sitting in her office, she heard a student yelling in the hallway. Ms. Greenwood brought him to her office for a quiet space to calm his nerves and to learn more. After cooling down, the student shared that he was new to the school, didn’t feel he had any friends, his mom had passed, and that he was dealing with housing challenges. He told her “I’m frustrated and I don’t want to be here.” Amani was dealing with stress and grief. Ms. G added him to her caseload for 1:1 services. After speaking to his counselor, she learned that as a senior he needed to pass 4 SOL exams – a lot to achieve by graduation. Ms. G and Amani began meeting weekly and she connected him to academic supports, mental health interventions, and other critical resources. When it was clear that he would not be able to complete his SOLs by May, she helped him get into summer school, where he took and passed his 4 exams and walked across the graduation stage for CCPS’s summer graduation ceremony.
