Congratulations to CJ!

L.C. Bird High School, Class of 2025

Carlton, better known as CJ, graduated from L.C. Bird High School this spring—and his journey with Communities In Schools of Chesterfield (CIS-C) is one that spans many years and campuses. He first connected with CIS-C at Chalkley Elementary, where he was on the caseload of then-Site Coordinator Wendy Lively, who now serves as CIS-C’s Director of Program Operations. Now, he’s closing out his senior year with the support of Site Coordinator Talaya Oxendine at Bird.

CJ’s relationship with Ms. Oxendine began during a difficult moment. She was not providing him with case managed services at the time, but an incident at school brought them together. “I met Ms. Oxendine when I was getting in trouble,” CJ recalled. “She saved me. I asked if she could help keep me out of trouble.” That request became the foundation of a powerful mentorship.

Under Ms. Oxendine’s guidance, CJ began to see school—and himself—differently. “She helped me look at school differently and take it more seriously,” he said. “I became more of an open person while on her caseload.”

Together, they focused on two key goals: identifying a path after graduation and developing strategies to respond to authority figures in more positive ways. Ms. Oxendine coached CJ on how to advocate for himself and seek support from people who had his best interests at heart.

That support helped CJ reach several major milestones this year. He earned a spot on the A/B Honor Roll for the first time in his academic career and, nominated by school staff, received the Core Value Award for Respect—both proud achievements that reflect how far he’s come.

“What I appreciated most was having a safe space and someone to talk to,” CJ says. “Ms. Oxendine was someone who would advocate for me.”

After graduation, CJ plans to attend trade school to pursue a career in electricity, inspired by a family member already in the field. He dreams of building a successful, financially stable life.

CJ’s story is a powerful example of how caring relationships and consistent support can shape a student’s future. From elementary school to high school, Communities In Schools of Chesterfield is honored to have walked alongside him on this journey.
