Congratulations to Dre!
Carver Academy, Class of 2025
Dre, a Carver Academy graduate, found purpose and motivation through a mix of hard work, hands-on learning, and a quiet confidence in who he is. Growing up in Dinwiddie County before moving to Chesterfield in 2019, Dre is the middle child of a large family. He enjoys life’s calmer moments: fishing, walking, and reading self-help books that push him to grow. That reflective mindset shows up in his personal motto: “Never misunderstood, just be you.”
With help from Site Coordinator Mary Thompson, Dre began focusing on consistent attendance and academic progress. While he was always committed to completing his work, he often missed school due to caring for his grandmother during her illness. “She’s such an amazing person,” Dre said of Ms.Thompson. “She checked on me, always had snacks, and gave me a quiet space—it makes a difference.” That consistent support helped Dre stay motivated and on track. Ms.Thompson shared that Dre showed strong progress when he had consistent support and accountability from caring adults.
One of his proudest accomplishments this year was getting a job working on cars—a role he enjoys because of the positive, supportive environment from the team he works with. Dre thrives in hands-on settings and has clear plans for what’s next: he wants to begin an apprenticeship in electrical or carpentry work, climb the ranks to become a journeyman, and eventually attend VCU to study business.
Long term, Dre’s goals are rooted in helping others and being a role model. “I want to show other people they can do it too,” he said—proof that his quiet strength and determination are already lighting the way for others.
