Congratulations to Elmer!

Carver Academy, Class of 2025

Elmer, a 2025 Carver Academy graduate, was on a steady path of growth and perseverance—supported by Communities In Schools of Chesterfield at Falling Creek Middle School and then Carver. Originally from Guatemala, Elmer, an English language learner, moved to Chesterfield in 2015 and has since built a life here with his family, including his two siblings.

Outside of school, Elmer enjoys the simple things like taking walks to relax and recharge. His calm, steady approach to life has helped him overcome some big challenges, especially when it comes to showing up and putting in the work.

Thanks to the support of Site Coordinator Mary Thompson, Elmer tackled two of his biggest goals this year: improving his attendance and raising his grades. “Sometimes I just felt tired and wanted to sleep,” he admitted, but with encouragement and motivational incentives, he began coming to school more regularly. Ms. Thompson also worked closely with him on completing missing assignments, providing the quiet space and one-on-one support he needed to stay focused and succeed.

That hard work paid off—Elmer passed all his classes, met his attendance goals, and successfully passed his SOLs!

What stood out most to Elmer was the different kind of support he received through CIS. “She helps in a way that works,” he said of Ms. Thompson. “She makes sure you have a quiet environment and someone to help you one-on-one.”

After graduation, Elmer plans to attend trade school to study electricity—a career path he’s excited about because of the hands-on work and the potential to earn a good living. Long term, he’s keeping it simple: he wants to stay in Virginia and build a stable life close to home.

With quiet determination and the right support system behind him, Elmer is stepping into his next chapter ready to power up his future.
