Carver Academy, Class of 2025

Greg’s educational journey wasn’t always easy, but with steady support and personal growth, he finished strong. A graduate of Carver Academy, Greg was connected to Communities In Schools of Chesterfield since middle school, receiving support from CIS Site Coordinators at Falling Creek Middle School, Meadowbrook High School, and lastly, Carver.

Growing up in a big family, with five brothers and five sisters, Greg learned early on how to carve out his own space. After moving to Virginia from North Carolina at age six, he found joy in gardening, a hobby he picked up from his grandmother. “I like being outside and taking care of things,” he said.

At Carver, Greg formed a strong bond with Site Coordinator Mary Thompson, who he said made a major impact during his final years of high school. “Without Ms. Thompson, I wouldn’t have done good the last couple of years,” he reflected. She helped him stay on top of his schoolwork and motivated him to reach the goals they set together.

One of those was to make honor roll—and he did it! Greg worked hard to improve his grades, not just to graduate, but to prepare for what comes next: college. He plans to attend Virginia State University, with dreams of building a stable, fulfilling life beyond the classroom.

For Greg, having someone who was always there to listen and encourage him made all the difference. That kind of consistent, caring presence helped him stay grounded and focused through the ups and downs of high school.

As he looks to the future, Greg has big dreams. He wants a career that pays well, and one day hopes to move to Alaska, drawn by the peace and beauty of the northern lights.

With determination, resilience, Ms. Thompson, and the support of a caring community, Greg is ready to grow and thrive wherever life takes him.
