Amya came to Carver College and Career Academy in her freshman year. She was looking for a smaller, supportive environment for her high school years. Early on, Amya struggled with attendance, behavior and academics, which was getting in the way of her success in school. Mary Thompson, our CIS Site Coordinator at Carver saw that she was experiencing these challenges and brought Amya on as one of her individualized case managed students. Through their one-on-one check-ins, Mary was able to identify the kinds of resources and supports that Amaya needed to focus in school, which included academic and social emotional support. In addition, she participated in various small groups at Carver – “Amya was a shining star in several of our small groups, giving support for other students who were also struggling,” Ms. Thompson shared. With these wrap-around CIS services, her grades, behavior and attendance all improved, allowing her to reach the big milestone of high school graduation! According to Ms. Thompson “Amya has grown into a mature young lady and is ready to enter the workforce after graduation.” Three cheers for Amya and her bright future!
