Briana attended L.C. Bird High School since the 9th grade. During her freshman and sophomore year, Briana was enrolled in the Engineering Program at Bird with the hopes of becoming a biomedical engineer, specializing in prosthetic devices. Her junior and senior year, she was enrolled at the Technical Center and received her cosmetology license in May 2022. Briana came to work with Ms. Oxendine during her senior year due to having some personal struggles that she needed assistance with navigating.

Ms. Oxendine provided Briana with social emotional learning and how to apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop a healthy identity, manage emotions, and achieve personal and collective goals. Briana gained a strong sense of self confidence and began to really believe that she could achieve anything that she wants in life. In this process, she decided that she wants to help people in unfortunate situations by becoming an attorney, and hopefully one day help pass legislation that protects children. Briana graduated from Bird with a 4.0 GPA and will be attending Old Dominion University in the fall to major in Sociology and Pre-Law.  Briana was also one of our annual scholarship awardees! She won the Jay Swedenborg Scholarship, named after our most recent past Executive Director. The award is given to a student who exhibits educational excellence, diligence, and hard work in school. What an amazing young woman with a bright future ahead of her!
