Layla's Grad Spotlight

Congratulations to Layla!
L.C. Bird High School, Class of 2026

For Layla, graduating from L.C. Bird High School is about much more than earning a diploma. It’s the culmination of years spent balancing academics, athletics, leadership, family responsibilities, and a deep commitment to caring for others.

That commitment to others became even more important after the passing of her grandfather last summer. As her family navigated the loss, Layla spent many nights with her grandmother, helping care for her while also supporting her younger siblings. It was a lot to carry while maintaining a demanding schedule filled with classes, extracurricular activities, and leadership roles.

Fortunately, Layla found support through Communities In Schools Site Coordinator Stephanie Mardigian.

After initially connecting with school counselor Ms. Grant and joining Sources of Strength, Layla was introduced to Stephanie—a relationship that quickly became an important part of her high school experience.

“Ms. Mardigian gave me a space where I could decompress without being judged,” Layla said. “I felt like I had my own person in the counseling office.”

As Layla balanced caregiving responsibilities, rigorous coursework, athletics, and student leadership, Stephanie helped her focus on emotional wellness, time management, and setting healthy boundaries.

“There were times when I was doing so much that it was taking a toll on me mentally,” Layla said. “Ms. Mardigian helped me prioritize what I should be doing so I wouldn’t drain myself.”

More than anything, Layla appreciated the intentional support she received.

“I never felt like just another student,” she said. “Ms. Mardigian celebrated every achievement and gave me advice from an adult perspective that I could trust.”

And there were plenty of achievements to celebrate.

During her time at Bird, Layla earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license, maintained straight A’s, passed all of her AP exams and dual enrollment courses, and was accepted to Old Dominion University and the prestigious Perry Honors College. She served as a Chesterfield County Youth Advisory Ambassador, was elected Class President of her nursing program, captained the junior varsity volleyball team, ranked among Bird’s top two throwers in track and field, and was awarded the Communities In Schools of Chesterfield Bill Milliken Scholarship.

This fall, Layla will attend Old Dominion University to pursue a career in nursing. Her long-term goal is to become a nurse practitioner and certified nurse-midwife, helping bring new life into the world. She also hopes to become a doula and one day open her own birthing center.

Above all, Layla’s vision for the future is rooted in independence, stability, and service.

Those who know Layla would likely agree that she’s already well on her way. Whether she’s caring for family members, leading her peers, excelling in the classroom, or preparing for a future in healthcare, Layla has spent her high school years showing what it means to lead with both determination and compassion.

As she graduates from L.C. Bird High School, she leaves behind a legacy of resilience, service, and heart—and carries with her a future filled with possibility.
