Katherine's Grad Spotlight

Congratulations to Katherine!
Meadowbrook High School, Class of 2026

For Katherine, graduation represents the rewards of hard work, personal growth, and a commitment to becoming the best version of herself.

A lifelong Chesterfield County resident, Katherine attended Falling Creek Elementary and Falling Creek Middle School before graduating from Meadowbrook High School. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with friends and working, but much of her high school journey was focused on something even more important: becoming the person she wanted to be.

Katherine first met Communities In Schools Site Coordinator Carlos Marti long before she arrived at Meadowbrook. The two knew each other from Falling Creek Middle School, where Katherine was on his caseload and even played soccer with him.

That long-standing relationship helped create a foundation of trust when Katherine entered high school and faced challenges with behavior, attendance, and academics. Carlos consistently checked in on her, helping her stay focused on her grades, get to class on time, and make positive decisions.

One of Katherine’s biggest goals was improving her behavior and surrounding herself with positive influences. Through individual support and participation in a girls’ behavior-focused small group, she worked on managing her emotions, controlling her anger, and learning to view situations from different perspectives.

When school and life felt overwhelming, Carlos made sure she had a space to regroup.

“Mr. Marti would pull me from class sometimes just so I could decompress,” Katherine said.

At the same time, he helped her stay accountable academically through regular grade checks and conversations about attendance and missing assignments.

Over time, Katherine began to see what she was capable of achieving when she committed herself to her goals.

“If I really put my mind to it, I can accomplish it,” she said.

The results were clear. She improved her grades, avoided the conflicts that had once gotten her into trouble, and earned increased trust and responsibility from her family. Her growth did not go unnoticed at home, and she shared that her mother is proud of the progress she has made.

When reflecting on her experience with Communities In Schools, Katherine pointed to the genuine care she felt from Carlos.

“He actually cares about the students,” she said. “He’s open to hearing people. I had a different bond with him than with other adults in the school.”

Carlos has witnessed Katherine’s growth firsthand.

“Knowing her since sixth grade, when she commits to something, she will follow through.”

This fall, Katherine plans to attend Richard Bland College to study business and marketing, a field that appeals to her because of its analytical and numbers-focused side. She has also considered pursuing nursing, inspired by the care she witnessed nurses provide while supporting her grandmother through ongoing heart health challenges. Carlos believes either path would suit her well because of her ability to connect with people and stand out as a leader.

Looking ahead, Katherine hopes to build a successful career, achieve the goals she has worked so hard toward, retire her parents, and give back to her community.

For Katherine, graduation is not the finish line. It’s the beginning of a future she has intentionally worked toward—one built on growth, determination, and the confidence that comes from knowing she can accomplish whatever she sets her mind to.
