Kaleb's Grad Spotlight

Congratulations to Kaleb!
L.C. Bird High School, Class of 2026

Sometimes the most important turning points in life begin with a simple conversation. For Kaleb, one unexpected interaction during his sophomore year set him on a path that would change the course of his high school experience.

When Kaleb first met Communities In Schools Site Coordinator Talaya Oxendine during his sophomore year, he wasn’t on the path he wanted to be on.

At the time, he was frequently skipping class and struggling to stay engaged in school. The two met one afternoon when Kaleb needed a pass to return to class after skipping.

“We didn’t even know each other, but she still helped me,” Kaleb recalled.

That simple interaction became the beginning of a relationship that would have a lasting impact on his high school experience.

“Ever since then, we’ve been locked in,” he said.

Behind Kaleb’s struggles at school were challenges at home that left him feeling overwhelmed and distracted. As his attendance began to decline, behavior issues followed. He found himself spending more time in In-School Detention and falling back into habits that were preventing him from reaching his potential.

According to Talaya, attendance was the initial concern, but behavior quickly became a challenge as well. Rather than focusing solely on the behaviors, she worked to understand what was causing them. She provided a safe space where Kaleb could talk openly about what he was experiencing and receive guidance without judgment.

One of the most difficult challenges he faced came when his mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. The stress and emotions surrounding the situation made it even harder to stay focused on school.

Through regular conversations and consistent support, Talaya helped Kaleb shift his mindset and begin making different choices.

“The talks we had made an impact and made me genuinely want to change,” Kaleb said.

Together, they worked on improving his attendance, making better decisions, and focusing on the future he wanted for himself. Over time, Kaleb began to see himself not just as a better student, but as a better person.

As he started looking beyond high school, Talaya helped him explore his options, identify his goals, and develop a plan for the future. During his junior year, he made a major decision that would shape his next chapter: he enlisted in the military.

After graduation, Kaleb will serve in the National Guard and leave for basic training on June 15. He plans to pursue mechanic work through his military training, combining his interest in hands-on careers with the educational opportunities provided through military service. His decision also carries personal significance, as both his mother and grandfather served in the Army.

When asked what he appreciated most about the support he received through Communities In Schools, Kaleb’s answer went beyond academics or school success.

“I gained a new person in my life who I know will be a part of my life forever,” he said.

For Kaleb, Talaya became more than a school support. She became a trusted adult he could turn to whenever he needed guidance, encouragement, or simply someone to listen.

Looking ahead, Kaleb hopes to build a stable future for himself. He dreams of owning a home, securing a good-paying career, building his own car, and creating a life filled with opportunity and stability.

As he graduates from L.C. Bird High School and prepares to begin military service, Kaleb leaves behind the challenges that once held him back and moves forward with confidence, purpose, and a clear vision for his future.
