Clyde's Grad Spotlight

Congratulations to Clyde!
Carver Academy, Class of 2026

For Clyde, success in high school wasn’t about overcoming one major obstacle—it was about staying focused, remaining consistent, and making the most of every opportunity.

A lifelong Chesterfield County resident, Clyde spent all four years at Carver College and Career Academy, where he found an environment that helped him thrive. For Clyde, Carver’s smaller setting was the perfect fit.

“I liked that it was a smaller school,” he said. “I have ADHD, so it helped me stay focused.”

During his sophomore year, Clyde began building a stronger relationship with Communities In Schools Site Coordinator Mary Thompson. As a student who set high expectations for himself, one of his biggest goals was maintaining his academic success while avoiding the procrastination that sometimes threatened to get in the way.

Mary became an important source of accountability and encouragement. Together, they worked on improving time management, staying on top of assignments, and addressing attendance habits that were impacting his success, including skipping classes. Whether it was checking in on assignments, communicating with teachers about missing work, or helping him stay organized, she consistently helped Clyde stay on track.

When he needed extra support, Clyde would often stop by Mary’s office to work on assignments and make sure he was meeting deadlines. She also maintained regular communication with his mother, creating a team approach that helped reinforce his goals both at school and at home.

Together, they focused on time management, organization, and building the confidence needed to continue pushing forward.

One accomplishment Clyde is especially proud of is maintaining straight A’s throughout high school.

“Keeping all A’s was a big thing for me,” he said.

He also earned a spot on the varsity basketball team and secured a job while still in school—achievements that required discipline, commitment, and motivation.

“Having the motivation to do those things felt good,” he said.

Beyond academics, Clyde valued knowing there was always someone in his corner.

“She’s always there for me no matter what,” he said. “I come to her a lot. She always sees me.”

That sense of support proved especially meaningful as Clyde began preparing for life after graduation. Like many seniors, he felt nervous about the transition to college. Mary helped him navigate the decision-making process by discussing his options and even creating pro-and-con lists for the schools where he had been accepted.

This fall, Clyde plans to attend Radford University to major in business. Before starting college, he plans to continue working and saving money while preparing for the next chapter.

Looking ahead, Clyde dreams of starting his own business, achieving financial success at a young age, and traveling the world. He also hopes to use that success to help others and build a happy future with a family of his own.

As he graduates from Carver Academy, Clyde leaves with more than strong grades and accomplishments. He leaves with the confidence, work ethic, and support system that will help him continue reaching his goals—one step at a time.
