Mentor Resources

Welcome Mentors!

At Communities In Schools of Chesterfield, we believe every student deserves the support of a caring, consistent adult. Across our 17 partner schools, hundreds of volunteer mentors help make that possible by building meaningful relationships with students and providing encouragement, guidance, and connection.

This page was created as a resource for CIS-C mentors throughout their mentoring journey. In addition to the training provided during your on-site orientation, you’ll find tools and resources here to help you navigate the mentoring relationship, including activity ideas, conversation starters, Chesterfield County Public Schools policies, and other helpful guidance.

Our goal is to ensure every mentor feels supported, confident, and equipped to make a positive impact. We also encourage you to explore stories and testimonials from current and former mentors to learn more about the difference mentoring can make.

If you have questions, concerns, or suggestions for additional resources, please contact Wendy Lively, Director of Programs, at [email protected].

We are grateful for your commitment to supporting Chesterfield students!

Hear From Our Mentors

The CIS-C Mentor Handbook is a valuable resource for both new and returning mentors. It provides an introduction to key topics such as the role of a mentor, building positive relationships with students, maintaining healthy boundaries, and understanding how trauma can impact youth development.

While the handbook offers a comprehensive foundation, we hope it also sparks curiosity and encourages continued learning as you grow in your mentoring journey.

Mentor Training Video Series

To support you throughout your mentoring journey, CIS-C has created a four-part Mentor Training Video Series designed for both new and returning mentors. These short videos cover key topics such as building positive relationships, effective communication, setting appropriate boundaries, and understanding the role of a mentor.

Together with the Mentor Handbook, this series will help you feel confident, prepared, and equipped to make a meaningful impact in the life of a student.

CIS -C Volunteer Policy

Student safety is at the heart of everything we do.

As a CIS-C mentor, you’ll be asked to review and sign our Confidentiality Agreement and Volunteer Policy Acknowledgement to help ensure a safe and supportive experience for every student.

Your Site Coordinator will review the policies with you and collect your signatures during your on-site orientation.
