NyJah's Grad Spotlight

Congratulations to NyJah!
Meadowbrook High School, Class of 2026

For NyJah, graduating from Meadowbrook High School represents growth, resilience, and the choices he made to create a brighter future for himself.

Originally from Richmond, NyJah made the decision to move in with his aunt and uncle so he could attend school in Chesterfield County. He felt the change would help put him on the right path—and it did. During his time at Meadowbrook, he balanced academics, baseball, and a job at Food Lion, often heading straight from practice to work. Outside of school, he enjoyed listening to music and creating his own beats.

One of the first people NyJah met after transferring to Meadowbrook was Communities In Schools Site Coordinator Dr. Erica Hale. Their connection began on just his second day at school and grew stronger after she invited him to join Mega Mentors, a Chesterfield County mentoring program focused on student success, mentorship, and building strong support systems to help students reach greater achievement.

Over time, Dr. Hale became much more than a mentor. She provided a safe space where NyJah could be himself, talk through challenges, and build confidence in his future.

“She was always a listening ear,” he said. “She made me feel like I had a bright future ahead of me.”

Dr. Hale’s support extended beyond the school day. Whether checking in regularly or showing up to baseball games, she consistently demonstrated that she cared about NyJah as a person, not just as a student.

One of the most significant areas of growth for NyJah was learning how to manage difficult emotions. After losing both his niece and grandmother, he found himself struggling to cope with the grief.

“I shut down and didn’t want to do anything,” he recalled.

With Dr. Hale’s support, he learned healthy ways to process those emotions and move forward.

“I had to take the pain and turn it into passion,” NyJah said. “She taught me that it’s okay to let things go. The more you hold on to, the more it will weigh you down.”

Academically, Dr. Hale helped him strengthen his time-management skills and stay focused on his goals. She encouraged him to be more intentional about how he spent his time, helped him navigate challenges in math, and worked alongside teachers to ensure he had the support he needed to succeed.

The results were clear. NyJah earned Scholar Roll recognition for three quarters of his junior year and two quarters of his senior year, while also making Honor Roll throughout both years. He also earned the Communities In Schools of Chesterfield Robert S. Ukrop Scholarship.

As graduation approached, Dr. Hale also helped NyJah prepare for life after high school through college tours, scholarship applications, and planning for his future.

This fall, NyJah plans to attend Virginia State University, where he will participate in the ROTC program and major in Electrical Engineering.

Looking back, NyJah credits much of his success to the support system that helped him stay focused through life’s challenges.

“She helped me become calmer and work through tough situations,” he said. “She always believed in me.”

As he graduates from Meadowbrook High School, NyJah carries with him lessons about perseverance, self-belief, and the power of turning hardship into motivation. With a strong foundation and clear goals for the future, he is ready for the next chapter.
